Kakunnodate Denshiro has been producing high-quality cherry bark (Kabazaiku) products for over six generations since 1851. Kabazaiku is a product made from wild cherry bark. It is environmentally friendly because the traditional methods used by their specialists to collect the bark ensure that it will regrow even after harvesting. All Kabazaiku products are handmade. The main technique used is called the "wooden mold method," in which sheets of wood and cherry bark are wrapped around a wooden mold and ironed with a heated metal trowel. This process results in a high level of airtightness and is used to make lightweight but firm products such as tea caddies.
How to take care of Kabazaiku.
- Tea boxes: storing tea leaves in them helps maintain proper humidity and keep them in the best conditions.
- Wipe the products from time to time with a soft cloth in the direction of the wood grain.
Precautions for use.
- Use products only for their intended purpose.
- To avoid peeling, keep away from water. Do not leave in very humid conditions for long periods.
- To avoid distortion, cracking and color deterioration, avoid direct sunlight.
- Do not use products in the microwave or oven.
Maintenance tips
To ensure the longevity of your cutting board, we recommend regular maintenance with food-grade mineral oil and beeswax .
- Beeswax : As a preventative measure, apply a thin layer to the surface of the board. Let it soak in for a few hours, then remove the excess with a paper towel. Make sure to use a food-safe beeswax.
- Mineral Oil : As soon as the board shows signs of dryness, generously apply neutral mineral oil. Allow to absorb and reapply if necessary until completely absorbed. Then wipe off any excess. The oil must be food-grade.
- Occasional sanding : Once or twice a year, hand sand with 400-600 grit sandpaper to smooth the surface and close the pores of the wood. Then apply a new coat of beeswax to protect the board.
