Description

Kasama ware is a renowned Japanese pottery style that originated during the mid-Edo period. Potters from the Shigaraki region traveled the country to sell their wares, and one potter named Chōzaemon established a kiln in Hakoda village, invited by the headman Kuno Hanzaemon Michinobe. Kasama-yaki pottery style began with the patronage of the Kasama Domain's daimyō. During the Meiji period, Kasama became a leading pottery center, and after World War II, it opened up to craftsmen from diverse backgrounds. Today, over 300 potters are active in Kasama, shaping the evolving Kasama ware tradition with new clay types and glazes.
