Komon Kasumi Powder 50 g is a polishing powder designed for the maintenance and restoration of kasumi finishes on Japanese knives. When mixed with a small amount of water, it forms a paste that allows you to gradually work on the blade’s surface to refresh or even out its appearance. This formula follows the traditional finishing methods of Sakai knives and was developed by Ivan Gomez Fonseca to make it easier to use.
To prepare the paste, simply add water to the powder in a separate container until it reaches a consistency similar to that of toothpaste. Areas that should not be polished can be protected with adhesive tape. The paste is then applied to the blade with a fine sponge, working gently until the desired finish is achieved, after which the blade must be thoroughly rinsed with water.
Each container includes several pieces of 3M Softback Ultrafine abrasive sponge, corresponding approximately to a grit of 800 to 1000. The sponge has an abrasive side and a non-abrasive side, allowing you to adapt the application to the knife’s initial condition and finish. It also helps distribute the paste evenly across the blade’s surface.
Kasumi Powder is primarily intended for surface finishing, not for sharpening the edge. The result depends on the existing finish, the pressure applied, and how the blade has been prepared. For Japanese knives with a handcrafted Kasumi finish, it is best to work gradually and check the results regularly to preserve the original contrasts and visual geometry.
