Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a Kiridashi shichirin considered rare?

Because very few artisans still know how to make it. Cutting diatomaceous earth into blocks requires many years of skill and considerable physical strength, and the aging of these artisans has reduced the number of workshops capable of doing this work. Today, only two companies in the world still produce cut shichirin, including Maruwa Kogyo. This small model, despite its modest size, is therefore made using the same expertise as the large counter grills.

Can this mini Japanese barbecue be used directly on the table?

Yes, outdoors—in fact, that is one of its natural uses. Place it on a thick board or a heat-resistant plate rather than on a tablecloth or a varnished tray, as the base heats up during cooking. Keep the area around the burner clear and seat your guests at a safe distance from the coals. Then everyone can grill their skewers at their own pace, just like at a yakitori restaurant, without leaving the dinner table.
