Retailer: Komon Artisan: Maruwa Kogyo Product Type: BBQ Dimension: 600x200x170mm

NEW: Now sold with its Shibu-Uchiwa and three skewers (420mm) *IMPORTANT: Each BBQ is sold with 1.5kg of Kishu-Binchotan Premium. three skewers, a fan, and tongs. Kiridashi Shichirin is made by manually cutting clay into blocks at the end of a tunnel dug many years ago, so as not to crush the air pocket contained in the natural diatomaceous earth.

It is usually kneaded to break up the clay mass, which can crush the air vessel. Kiridashi Shichirin is cut into blocks and made into Shichirin shapes as is, so the vacuoles do not collapse, and it is characterized by higher heat retention and lightness. In addition, the cutting work requires many years of skill and physical strength, and due to the aging of the craftsmen, there are currently only two companies in the world capable of making cut shichirin.

This shichirin grill belongs to a tradition of Japanese charcoal grill handmade production that centers the cooking experience around the purity of Binchotan heat — radiant, even, and virtually smokeless. Unlike a standard konro charcoal grill, the kiridashi construction preserves the full insulating integrity of the diatomaceous earth body, allowing the grill to sustain precise temperatures over extended sessions — the defining demand of authentic yakitori preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Kiridashi shichirin and a Petri shichirin?

Everything depends on how it’s made. The Kiridashi shichirin is hand-cut from diatomaceous earth blocks extracted from the end of a tunnel that has been excavated over many years. Its natural air pockets remain intact, resulting in superior heat retention and reduced weight. The petri shichirin, by contrast, is kneaded before molding, which crushes some of these vacuoles but allows for a greater variety of shapes and colors. Only two companies in the world still make Kiridashi.

How to install a 600 mm shichirin for the first firing?

Place it outdoors on a stable, heat-resistant surface long enough to support its entire base. There is no need to fill the full 600 mm with charcoal: concentrate the coals on one section and keep a cooler area to keep the skewers warm. Light the binchotan separately, then transfer it using tongs. For the first use, heating it gradually helps the diatomaceous earth adapt to the temperature of the fire.
