Shichirin and Konro differ only in name, serving the same purpose and shape. Konro production increased because Mikawa clay from Aichi Prefecture was combined with clay from Suzu City (Ishikawa Prefecture). However, nowadays, diatomaceous earth from Suzu City (Ishikawa Prefecture) is primarily used for Mikawayaki. Unlike Kiridashi Shichirin, Mikawayaki Konro uses kneaded diatomaceous earth, but many Mikawa stoves are painted or compact for tabletop use in restaurants or ryokan (traditional Japanese inns).

The Komon konro teppan grill excels as a japanese iron plate grill, channeling radiant heat evenly across its surface to sear ingredients with precision — whether grilling yakitori skewers glazed with tare or lightly charring seasonal vegetables over binchotan coals. As a refined japanese tabletop bbq, it brings the intimate atmosphere of an izakaya or ryokan directly to your table, making every meal a quietly ceremonial moment of craft and flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use a konro grill indoors?

No, not in a house or apartment. Burning charcoal, including binchotan, releases carbon monoxide, an odorless and dangerous gas, even when there is little smoke. Restaurants that cook on a konro use exhaust hoods designed for charcoal cooking. At home, set up the konro outdoors, on a stable and heat-resistant surface, away from any flammable materials. An open window is not enough to make indoor use safe.

How do I maintain a diatomaceous earth konro?

Allow the konro to cool completely before moving it or emptying the ashes. Avoid pouring water directly onto the charcoal to extinguish it inside the konro: the thermal shock can crack the clay. Once cool, remove the ashes, brush the grate, and wipe the outside with a slightly damp cloth. Then store the konro away from rain and moisture, as diatomaceous earth absorbs water and does not tolerate frost well.
