Motokyuuichi kitchen knives are hand-forged in Shimabara City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. The Kyuuichi family had a strong reputation for samurai sword forgery during the Edo period, but the Kyuuichi lineage gradually withdrew from the sword forge over time. In 1895 the forge was taken over by the sword blacksmith Shoujiro Maeda to whom we owe the Motokyuuichi forge as we know it today. The Maeda lineage passed on know-how and knowledge from generation to generation; from the katana forge, to farming tools, hunting weapons and kitchen knives. It is to the4th and5th generation of blacksmiths of the Maeda family that we owe this transition to the forge of knives for the kitchen, all in an artisanal way and honoring Japanese traditions. Today, Yasuhide Maeda is in charge of Motokyuuicihi and with whom we are proud to collaborate to offer you quality Japanese knives at the right price!
